Jianshui is one of the four ancient Chinese pottery styles, characterized by unglazed clay decorated ceramics, renowned worldwide. The clay is sourced from the local “Five Colors Mountain,” hence the five colors of clay being red, yellow, green, brown, and white. Clay masters keep the best locations secret and pass them down only to their successors. Jianshui clay has a particularly high iron content, resulting in outstanding hardness of the fired vessels, with a surface that feels metallic to the touch and produces a sound like both metal and stone when struck. Jianshui ceramics are not glazed but meticulously polished, providing a shiny, reflective experience akin to observing a mirror: “hard as iron, shiny as water, silky as jade, ringing like a rock.”
