Description
STYLE
This is a tenmoku style cup, which is generally characterised by a dark glossy surface, with distinctive stains and metallic discolourations in the glaze, caused by the various metallic oxides in the glaze mixture. It looks most like a traditional oil drop patterned tenmoku with gold droplets on a black background. On the inside part, a jumping cat patch can be seen. The glaze dripping down the bottom of the cup is a typical aesthetic feature of tenmoku ceramics. Its shape and quantity are perfect in this case, not overdone. A unique handmade teacup from Yang Qing Qing Lao Shi, Taiwan. The thick glaze on the heavy clay body ends above the base. This gives a nice outline to the bottom of the cup. A classical style bamboo hat shape.

BACKGROUND
Jian Yao – Temmoku/Tianmu
A kiln established in the city of Jianyang, Fujian province, during the late Tang period, which flourished during the Song Dynasty. It is generally characterised by a black glossy surface, with distinctive stains and metallic discolourations in the glaze, caused by the various metallic oxides in the glaze mixture. In the Song period, Jian kiln-fired pots were used only by the imperial court. Teacups were the most typical design, as the black harmonised well with the cream-coloured foam of Song-period roasted, powdered tea. It is characterised by a thick, coarse-grained local ore glaze fired onto black or greyish-black clay, which produces unusual patterns. The most common patterns are rabbit hair, oil drop, rabbit feather, yaobian and tea powder glaze.
