Penguin Chawan | Ofuke-style, black-and-white, symmetrical matcha bowl

39.00

Perfect for everyday use, this atmospheric matcha chawan comes from Gifu, the area richest in varied and sophisticated glaze techniques in Japan.

Description

STYLE

A bell-shaped matcha bowl with black base and white spots, symmetrical from the side as well. Following the wabi-sabi movement that spread in the 16th century, the Mino ceramic industry returned to central, traditional Chinese cup shapes for everyday items. The glazes also followed the pattern, simple texture, and smoothness of temmoku cups, with fewer lines and stylized forms featuring plant ornamentation. This kireisabi, unlike wabi-sabi, is less amorphous, simple, and refined, a descendant of old functional ceramics. Perfect for everyday use, this atmospheric matcha chawan comes from Gifu, the area richest in varied and sophisticated glaze techniques in Japan.
