The tea tray has been a key element of Chinese tea culture since the Qing Dynasty. Bamboo tea trays are characterised by aesthetically clean shapes, simplicity, smooth and hard surfaces, elegance, modern and minimalist appearance. Higher quality old bamboo tea trays are less deformed, as indicated by the thickness of the fibres or the width of the veins on the surface. The thicker the bands on the surface of the tray, the better quality and durability of the chapan. Smaller bamboo trays can be the decoration of a small tea corner, or a workplace tool, while larger trays can be the permanent, central fixture of a fixed tea table. The structural elements of the tray are cut from pressed panels, carved, polished, decorated and then assembled. In a final step, they are painted with paint and beeswax, then varnished if necessary and dried in a dust-free place.
