Description

STYLE

Traditional Shipiao shape, a trapezoidal stone spoon, which is one of the most popular traditional teapot forms worldwide. The design is attributed to Chen Mansheng, a Qing dynasty teapot maker, who was inspired by the shape of a water meter lrage spoon. It features a stable, wide-bottomed form with a short spout and a large filter. This design allows a secure grip and fast pouring. The high-quality clay and thick body provide excellent brewing characteristics, especially for teas that require hot preparation, such as Wuyi oolongs and Shu Pu-erh.

Chen Mansheng (1768–1822) was a scholar, calligrapher, painter, and provincial official, serving at one time as the magistrate of Yixing. He established a creative circle with his friends and contemporaries, which included teapot makers of his era. During his time, he designed 18 (or possibly more) teapot shapes for Yang Pengnian and Shao Erquan, two leading teapot artisans of the period. He surrounded himself with poets, philosophers, and scholars, who inscribed quotes, sayings, poems, and wisdom on the teapots. The 18 classic forms named after him are considered fundamental values of teapot artistry by collectors and tea drinkers alike.
