BACKGROUND

Guanyin, derived from the Sanskrit Avalokitesvara, is the third and most popular deity in the Chinese Buddhist pantheon. Revered in China as the goddess of kindness and virtue, she holds a role akin to Virgin Mary in Christian traditions. Worship extends to Korea, Japan, and Tibet. Often depicted as a female figure, Guanyin is believed to rescue people from troubles, promote fertility, aid in childbirth, and protect women.Originally portrayed as a male warrior, the female depiction gained prevalence from the 14th century onward. Variations include four-armed, eight-armed, eleven-faced, and thousand-armed forms.

Common attributes include a vase with willow branches (symbolizing rescue), a book, a reader, a pilgrim’s staff, a trident rake, and a tiger skin skirt (symbolizing fearlessness). Thousand-armed depictions show eyes in each hand, representing her ability to perceive suffering across countless worlds and offer assistance.
