Description

STYLE

Tanikawa Hitoshi, aka “Jin”, one of Tokoname’s popular ceramics masters, is best known for his mogake (seaweed-fired) style ceramics. Mogake literally means “wrapped in seaweed”. The interaction of algae minerals and clay creates unique copper and gold fired patterns on the surface of the ceramic. The sandy surface of the pot will mellow beautifully with green teas! Tanikawa Jin is one of the most distinctive masters of his style (and recipient of numerous awards) in Tokoname. Tokoname (Aichi Province) is one of the six old Japanese ceramics centres, the best known and largest producer of tea ceramics in Japan, the Japanese equivalent of the Chinese Yixing in frequency and popularity. The traditional handle-shaped pot form was introduced to Japan through Chinese and then Korean mediation, and since then kyusu has been the most commonly used ceremonial pot type. It is mainly recommended for quality Japanese greens, sencha and gyokuro teas.
